Undulating tile

Our decorative tiles are handmade and sgraffito-carved. Sgraffito is the ancient Italian art of applying layers of contrasting slip to a clay body and then scratching away on the surface to produce a drawing. The tiles are finished with 28 lush glazes.

Here’s a side view of the undulation in the tile:

Working on new piece

This is a closeup of tiles that are part of a larger piece (below).  The piece will hang in a stairwell and will be glazed in persimmon.

The bottom photo shows the stairwell where the piece will hang. Note that the tile design is meant to complement the hand-made railing, by Kevin Rodrigue/Rodrigue Studios, Spotsylvania, VA

Commercial installation of ceramic wall tile mural

This tile piece was recently installed in the lobby of the parking garage for 1706 Rittenhouse Square Street, luxury condos in Philadelphia, PA.  The piece is 78″ wide x 138″ high, glazed in turquoise.  The piece is mounted on a limestone wall, which really sets off the turquoise color.

We took a lot of time to find the right design that would please everyone, and add to the sophistication of the space.  Each tile is mounted to a 2.5″ thick plywood box mounted on the back with security hardware so the tiles are immovable. Because the alcove is 15″ thick, we wanted to pull the tiles away from the wall so they felt truly architectural as well as graphically stunning yet restful.
The result is soothing and yet at the same time enlivens the space.

Residential Installation, Daphne, Alabama

These tiles were purchased by a couple building a home in Daphne, Alabama. They purchased the tiles from Natalie at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show, New York City, two years ago.

Here’s what the homeowner had to say “We bought the tiles not knowing how much space we had to fill but just knew it would engage the eye and compliment the overall themes we we had in mind (nature and the sea).  We went for a more random display than the rectangular layout we originally envisioned.”
